White Lotus Community Dining Association


1. Name and Nature

White Lotus is a membership-based private dining association operating in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.

We are a community of members who gather to share kai, build relationships, and foster cultural connection through the practice of manaakitanga and tikanga Māori.


2. Purpose and Kaupapa

The purpose of White Lotus is to:

  • Provide a welcoming space for members to gather, share meals, and build community

  • Practice and honor tikanga Māori in our daily operations and relationships

  • Foster cultural exchange, learning, and mutual respect

  • Support the wellbeing and connection of our members and wider community

  • Maintain a space guided by the principles of manaakitanga (hospitality), whanaungatanga (kinship), and kaitiakitanga (guardianship)


3. Membership

3.1 Eligibility

Membership is open to all who share our values and wish to participate in community dining guided by tikanga Māori.

3.2 Application

Prospective members may:

  • Be invited by existing members, or

  • Apply directly through our website or in person

Membership is free and open to all who support our kaupapa.

3.3 Membership Process

New members are welcomed through a simple registration process. When you arrive, we will sign you up if you are not yet a member. It is quick, free, and part of how we keep our community connected.

3.4 Member Rights

Members have the right to:

  • Access the dining space during operating hours

  • Participate in community gatherings and events

  • Be treated with respect, dignity, and manaakitanga

  • Have their privacy protected in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

3.5 Member Participation

White Lotus operates as a cooperative community. All activities, including food preparation, service, and maintenance of the space, are carried out by members for members. There is no distinction between “team” and “members” – we are all participants in creating and maintaining our community space.


4. Guiding Principles

White Lotus operates according to tikanga Maori, which informs how we relate to one another, our space, and our community.

4.1 Manaakitanga (Hospitality and Care)

We welcome all members with warmth and ensure everyone feels valued and cared for.

4.2 Whanaungatanga (Kinship and Connection)

We foster relationships based on mutual respect, trust, and genuine connection.

4.3 Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship and Responsibility)

We take responsibility for the wellbeing of our members, our space, and our community.

4.4 Aroha (Love and Compassion)

We approach all interactions with kindness, understanding, and genuine care for others.

4.5 Tika (Integrity and Righteousness)

We act with honesty, transparency, and moral integrity in all our operations.


5. Member Responsibilities

By becoming a member of White Lotus, you agree to:

  • Respect the kaupapa (purpose) and tikanga (protocols) of White Lotus

  • Treat all members and visitors with respect, kindness, and manaakitanga

  • Contribute to a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment

  • Support the collective wellbeing of the association and its members

  • Respect the privacy and dignity of fellow members

  • Engage with the space and community in good faith


6. Operations

6.1 Location

White Lotus operates at 363 St Asaph Street, Christchurch.

6.2 Food Safety

Food safety and quality are paramount. Members involved in food preparation maintain high standards of hygiene, preparation, and service to ensure the health and wellbeing of all members.

6.3 Membership-Based Model

White Lotus operates exclusively as a membership-based association. We do not operate as a public restaurant. All dining services are provided to members only.


7. Governance

7.1 Decision-Making

White Lotus is guided by tikanga-informed decision-making processes that prioritize:

  • The wellbeing of members and community

  • Cultural integrity and respect

  • Transparency and accountability

  • Collective responsibility

7.2 Disputes

Any disputes or concerns are addressed through processes informed by tikanga, emphasizing restoration of relationships, mutual understanding, and community harmony.


8. Privacy and Data Protection

8.1 Member Information

Member information is held in confidence and used solely for the purposes of:

  • Membership administration

  • Communication about White Lotus activities and events

  • Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community

8.2 Privacy Policy

All member data is managed in accordance with our Privacy Policy, available on our website.

8.3 Confidentiality

Members’ personal information will not be shared with third parties without consent, except as required by law.


9. Amendments

These Articles of Association may be amended from time to time to reflect the evolving needs and kaupapa of White Lotus.

Members will be notified of any significant changes to these Articles.


10. Acknowledgment

White Lotus acknowledges the mana whenua of Ōtautahi Christchurch and operates with respect for Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the ongoing relationship between tangata whenua and tangata tiriti.

We honor the values and traditions of tikanga Māori while welcoming people of all backgrounds to share in community, kai, and cultural exchange.
