White Lotus Mission Society
White Lotus is a membership-based community association in Ōtautahi Christchurch, grounded in tikanga Māori and dedicated to creating space for wellness, learning, cultural exchange, and genuine human connection.
Since 2022, we have been building a community where people gather to share knowledge, cultivate wisdom, support one another’s wellbeing, and participate in meaningful collective life.
Our Kaupapa (Purpose)
We believe in the power of community to nourish body, mind, and spirit.
White Lotus provides space for:
-
Shared kai and hospitality – Gathering over food prepared with love and care
-
Wellness and healing – Supporting each other’s physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing
-
Learning and creativity – Sharing knowledge, skills, arts, and cultural practices
-
Community gathering – Meeting, connecting, and building relationships across difference
-
Cultural exchange – Honoring tikanga Māori while welcoming diverse traditions and perspectives
Our space is guided by the principles of tikanga Māori:
-
Manaakitanga – Hospitality, generosity, and care for others
-
Whanaungatanga – Building kinship and genuine connection
-
Kaitiakitanga – Taking collective responsibility for our community and space
-
Aroha – Acting with love, compassion, and respect
-
Tika – Integrity, righteousness, and doing what is right
These values inform everything we do – from how we welcome new members to how we hold space for healing, learning, and growth.
A Mission Society
Mission societies and member-based associations have existed in communities throughout the world for generations. They provide structure through which people may gather around shared values, mutual support, education, culture, service, and community participation.
White Lotus operates as a mission society guided by tikanga tuku iho – the ancestral customs and practices that have shaped Māori communities across generations.
We are a voluntary association of members who share a commitment to:
-
Self-responsibility and mutual care
-
Genuine human connection over commercial transaction
-
Collective wellbeing and community resilience
-
Cultural respect and learning
-
Service to our members and wider community
Our Community
White Lotus has grown to over 3,700 members who share our vision of community-centered wellness, culture, and connection.
We are diverse in background, age, and experience – united by a desire to participate in meaningful collective life beyond the purely commercial sphere.
There is no distinction between “team” and “members” at White Lotus. We are all participants in creating and maintaining our community space. Some members prepare kai, some welcome newcomers, some facilitate healing practices, some organise gatherings, some maintain the space – all contribute according to their gifts and capacity.
This is the principle of utu – reciprocity, balance, and mutual contribution. We give what we can, we receive what we need, and together we create something greater than any of us could alone.
What We Offer

Membership
Membership is free and open to all who share our values and wish to participate in community life.
How Membership Works
White Lotus operates by invitation and in-person membership. We do not have a public shopfront or commercial premises.
When you arrive, our member team will welcome you at the door. If you’re not yet a member, we will sign you up – it’s quick, free, and part of how we keep our community connected.
Existing members are encouraged to invite friends, whānau, and colleagues who would value what we offer. We also welcome those who find us through word of mouth and wish to become part of our community.
Membership is entered into voluntarily and helps us maintain the integrity of our kaupapa, our shared spaces, and our community relationships.
Tikanga in Practice
At White Lotus, tikanga is not abstract philosophy – it is lived daily practice.
We greet each other with genuine warmth. We share kai prepared with care. We hold space for healing and growth. We learn from each other across cultures and generations. We take collective responsibility for our space and our community.
-
Karakia may be offered before meals or gatherings to honor what we share
-
Whakaaro (thoughtfulness) guides how we care for each other
-
Kōrero (conversation) flows freely as members connect and learn
-
Manaakitanga shapes how we welcome, include, and care for all
-
Whanaungatanga is built through shared practice, mutual support, and genuine relationship
We honor the wisdom of Te Ao Māori while creating space for all cultural traditions to be respected and shared.
Our Vision
White Lotus is more than a place – it is a practice, a commitment, a way of being in community.
We are building something different from the purely commercial world:
-
Where genuine relationship matters more than transaction
-
Where wellness is collective, not individual
-
Where culture is lived, not commodified
-
Where everyone has something to offer and everyone belongs
As our community grows, we remain committed to the values that ground us: tikanga, manaakitanga, and genuine care for one another and the world we share.
If these values speak to you, we welcome you to join us.
